Join us for a 'fireside chat' with local author Christine Nykoluk as she discusses her debut novel Heart Stones.

Christine Nykoluk’s historical fiction novel, Heart Stones: A Ukrainian Immigration Story of Love and Hope tells the story of her grandparent’s difficult separation during WWI. Using “Fireside Chat” format, she and local author Nikki Tate will explore the story arc of Heart Stones, and how Nykoluk approached writing her family story into historical fiction.

In 1914, a young Ukrainian family faces an uncertain future. With growing political unrest in Galicia, Myk makes the hardest choice of his life and leaves his wife and two young children, with hopes of quickly sending for them. Things don't go as planned: WWI breaks out shortly after, leaving his family at the mercy of enemy forces, whose violence and cruelty drive his wife, Lilia, and their children out of their home village. Heart Stones is based on the real experiences of the author's grandparents and paints a poignant picture, touching on historical events of the time with which many people today are blissfully unaware.

This event will take place on Thursday, September 28th at 7:00pm in the Friends Program Room.
