About the Presenter:

Timberline Alpine Academy is a vocational College based in Mini Hrpa (Banff). They provide programming for about 70 students per season, age 18 and up, from Canada and around the world. Their programming includes ski instructor certification, avalanche skills training, wilderness first aid, indigenous relations, ecology and more! Their goal is to foster a well rounded outdoor community that values both technical training and a deep appreciation for ecology, community, and history.

First year students explore their impacts on community and ecology through hands on research projects that you can hear about tonight and all this week!

What is Earth Talks?
Earth Talks is a new program coming to the CPL, in collaboration with the Biosphere Institute of the Bow Valley, to bring you monthly environmental speakers and conversations relevant to our community.

On one Monday evening each month, we will be joined by Biosphere staff in the Friends Program Room at 7:00pm for an Earth Talk. Earth Talks will typically be held on the third Monday of the month, with a few exceptions.

Admission is free, with donations graciously accepted.

Get inspired to learn more about the world around us and what we can do to preserve it!

About Wildlife Corridors in the Bow Valley:
Attendees will learn about:

  • What are wildlife corridors, why are they important, and why do I hear so much about them in the Bow Valley?
  • What characteristics must wildlife corridors have to keep wildlife populations healthy and resilient?
  • How do we keep our corridors functional in the face of future pressures?

About the Presenter:

Hilary Young is a Canmore local and conservation professional with almost a decade of experience working to protect and connect habitat in western Canada. Shortly after completing her PhD in Ecology at the University of Calgary, Hilary was thrilled to find work at the Yellowstone to Yukon Conservation Initiative (Y2Y) that blends her passion for the beautiful Rocky Mountains with her background in ecology and conservation biology.

Now, as Director of Communities and Conservation for Y2Y, Hilary and her team engage a wide range of communities for solutions that benefit nature and people. This includes working with residents and Indigenous and non-Indigenous decision-makers to support key planning decisions; partnering with recreation and tourism organizations to limit impacts of their industries; and collaborating with local communities to listen, learn and implement solutions that promote human-wildlife coexistence.

Before taking the new role in the Communities and Conservation program a year ago, Hilary was the Director of Y2Y’s Alberta program. Her team focused on wildlife corridors and highway crossings in key regions like the Bow Valley to ensure that wide-ranging species like grizzly bears, wolves, and elk could move between and beyond protected areas. Central to Y2Y’s work is an equity- and justice-oriented lens so that the organization’s efforts benefit both nature and people within the greater Y2Y region.

Moderator: Gareth Thomson, Executive Director, Biosphere Institute of the Bow Valley.
