We're Fine Free!

The Canmore Library is now FINE FREE!

We are excited to announce that as of January 1, 2024, the Canmore Public Library will no longer charge late fines on overdue items.

This is a key element of our 2024 – 2027 Strategic Plan of Service that emphasizes the reduction of financial barriers that impact library access and use, helping us to provide equitable access for all.

Any overdue fines currently on an account will be waived. If you note overdue fines on your account, please have patience as it will take us some time to remove all previous fines.

Please note that charges for lost and damaged items are still in effect.

Library Director Michelle Preston spoke to the Rocky Mountain Outlook about the Library's decision to go fine free. You can read the article on the RMO website here.

Fine Free FAQ's

The Library eliminated overdue fines as of January 1st, 2024.

Fine free means we are no longer charging late fines for materials returned past their due date. Charges for lost and damaged items are still in effect.

We are going overdue fine free in effort to remove financial barriers that may limit library access or use. It is an important step to ensuring equal access to library services and materials. We want to support lifelong learning and library use in our community, where everyone can freely access resources and information, no matter their circumstances or stage of life.

The Library is a community hub that allows it's users the freedom to learn, explore, and connect. We don't want overdue fines to be the reason anyone stops using the Library, limiting their access to Library resources, services and materials.

No, our loaning periods have not changed and due dates will remain the same. Items are still expected to be returned on or before their due date.

Our loan periods are: 21 days for most items; 7 days for Canmore Library DVDs (other libraries may have longer loan periods).

You will still have 2 renewals available for items checked out on your account, as long as there are no holds placed on the item.

While we are no longer charging late fines, we do still need our materials back! We understand that life can be busy, so friendly reminders will help keep us on track. You will still receive a courtesy due date reminder three days before your item is due.

Once an item is past due, you will receive additional reminder notices at 11 and 22 days past the due date. If the materials have not been returned within 31 days of the due date, the item will be posted as lost and the replacement charge added to your account. If that charge exceeds $10, you will lose access to your account until the materials are returned or the charges are paid.

All charges will be waived once the item is returned in good condition.

If the Library is closed, materials can be returned at any time through our 24 hour book drop.

Yes, you can still borrow items with overdue items out on your account. Borrowing privileges won't be impacted until the item is posted as lost, and the replacement charges on your account exceeds $10. If the item is under $10, borrowing will still be permitted.

Though charges for lost and damaged item will still apply, we will clear all existing overdue fines on patron accounts. This will take time to complete, so please don't worry if you notice overdue fines are still on your account.

Although the Library is no longer charging overdue fines, replacement costs for lost and damaged items charges still apply.

If library materials aren’t returned within 31 days after the due date, the item will be posted as lost, and your account will be charged for the replacement cost. If that cost is greater than $10, your account will be blocked from borrowing. When these items are returned and checked in, these charges will be removed and you will be able to access your account and borrow materials again.

We understand that unexpected things can happen that might result in library items being lost or damaged. If you have a lost or damaged item, please don't hesitate to reach out and we can let you know your options.

One of the best ways our patrons can support the Library is by using the Library!

If you'd like to make a monetary contribution to the Library, we have a donation box located at the front desk, or you can visit this page on our website to learn about other ways you can support the Canmore Library. Every donation makes a difference and is used to help us enhance the Library's collection and and services.
